I asked my dad Herman A. Fergerstrom. He said none of the kids ever even saw George John Fergerstrom. They didn't know him. They didn't know what happened to him. He said Grandpa Fergie (John Cook F.) tried to track him down at one point but couldn't find him. He thought that John George died on Maui but wasn't sure.

Grandpa Fergie was cool. But us kids were kind of scared of him. His manner was kind of gruff and abrupt with us, but even after growling at one of us kids, you would always catch him sneaking you a smile!

He lost two fingers on his left hand to a dynamite accident while constructing a cesspool on the Big Island. This didn't stop him from playing the ukulele, playing Japanese "Yako" card games and working with his home-made bench grinders and polishers to make coconut bowls and jewelry in his spare time.

He worked in the cane fields on the Hamakua Coast on the Big Island as a sugar "luna" or supervisor over field workers. He rode a horse and carried a whip! He spoke English, Portuguese and Hawaiian.

They lived in Papaaloa, Laupahoehoe, Hawaii until the late 50s or early 60s, when they moved to 1952 Dole St. in Honolulu while their youngest son, Robert, attended University of Hawaii.

He died of a heart attack in his sleep.
